A GOLFING SOCIETY WITH CHARITABLE AIMS

Captain's Orders
It has been an absolute honour and privilege to serve as Captain of the Comedians Golfing Society this year.
From the moment of the Captain’s Drive-In at Whitehills, I felt both proud and humbled to represent a Society with such history, camaraderie, and character. That first tee shot set the tone for what would become a truly memorable season.
Our Invitational Day was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year. The event was a tremendous success, and I must extend sincere thanks to the sub-committee, ably led by Colin Lewin, whose organisation and dedication ensured everything ran smoothly. We enjoyed a fantastic attendance, a brilliant atmosphere, and best of all, we were able to welcome a couple of new members to the Society as a direct result.
We’ve been fortunate to play some lovely courses throughout the season, including Westerham and Woldingham, both of which provided great golf and even better company. The Riderless Cup at St. Pierre was also extremely well supported, and once again we enjoyed a superb weekend filled with good sport, good spirits, and plenty of laughs.
On a personal note, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to those who have guided and supported me throughout my Captaincy. None more so than Genevieve and Patrick, who both go far beyond the call of duty and without whom the Society simply wouldn’t function as seamlessly as it does. My thanks also go to Dave Brock, Colin Lewin, Matt Harper-Ward, Rich Rogers and Tony Pieri for their invaluable help, and to Barry and Paul and Marc for the often thankless tasks of managing handicaps, running the website and arranging our fixtures.
Their unseen work keeps the wheels turning. I am hugely looking forward to the upcoming Annual Ball on the 25th of January at the Brands Hatch Mercure Hotel. With its optional 1920s theme, live music from Shane Hampsheir and his Big Band, and comedy from our very own new member, Christopher Gee, it promises to be a truly fantastic evening and a fitting celebration of the season.
As we look ahead, the Society will proudly enter its 49th year in 2026. With such a milestone in sight, it is imperative that all members continue to support the Society in any way they can—whether playing, attending events, helping behind the scenes, or simply keeping the spirit of the CGS alive.
In conclusion, I would like to thank every single member who attended matches this year. We have a committed core of regulars, but it has also been heartening to see members who can no longer play still turning up to lend their support. That loyalty and friendship are what make this Society truly special.
Finally, I’d like to wish Matt Harper-Ward all the very best for his upcoming season as Captain. I hope it all goes swimmingly—and that he manages to turn up at the correct venues every now and then!
Captain Hammo, Soon to be irrelevant again…
